Hollow 04:17
hollow (courtney hartman/maya de vitry) hollow me out clean on every side for a story line i must tell follow the trail i have left on the way nothing more to say for myself bottle up the sounds of slowing moving water of pigeons when they coo and flutter church bells tolling the time of the day and someone telling someone to stay halt my step when i move to fast walking blindly past night into day swaying up high bodies caught in the sky and with no reason why we’re falling down bottle up sounds of slowing moving water of pigeons when they coo and flutter church bells tolling the time of the day and someone telling someone to stay to bottle up sounds of slowing moving water of pigeons when they coo and flutter church bells tolling the time of the day and someone telling someone to stay
2.
january first (courtney hartman) making soft resolutions at the end of december to walk a little slower and try to talk cleaner if i’m particularly ambitious i'll wake before the sunup we’ll cook more together and try not to ever fall asleep with the light switch on january first will be here ready or not i can be to careful you can be too kind i can be too sorry you can be too right we can be too knowing we can be too wise if we both stay quiet it'll keep us blind january first will be here ready or not one way or another i love you more than i thought there's a comfort in knowing how a story ends maybe that's why i don't mind when you tell the same ones over and over and over again january first will be here we'll make it or not one way or another i love you more than i thought
3.
january third (courtney hartman) i said to myself take this slow no need to rush a thing that will grow on its own and we said to ourselves step carefully carry your bodies upright and watch your feet the river today was tinted green it may have just been me seeing what i wanted to see the color of going, the color of may the color of wanting color when all is grey why oh why in the night do we turn and toss and turn why oh why oh why don't we ever learn if the speed of light is the speed of dark than is the speed of love the speed of the heart why do we hesitate you know i could be all of the things you say about me oh why oh why in the night do we turn and toss and turn why oh why oh why don't we ever learn
4.
Belfry 03:00
belfry (courtney hartman) i am no speaker, i fumble all of my words when something needs saying only makes it worse i heard you calling and i turned the other way there was nothing left that i wanted less than to say what you said to say send out a light from the belfry send out a light from the ivory towers send out a light from the belfry telling the hour to go he was no prophet no proper lineage just a herdsman out working a sower of the sycamore fig they called him amos, giver of the word when something needed saying he put it into verse crying send out a light from the belfry send out a light from the ivory towers send out a light from the belfry telling the hour to go if i falter, when i fall along the way let the laughter cover up the doubter i don't need the doubter weighing in and send out a light from the belfry send out a light from the ivory towers send out a light from the belfry telling the hour to go
5.
Too Much 04:56
too much (courtney hartman) soft moon rising far from my home i cannot concentrate on the task at hand any better than i can when i'm alone on familiar land this ought to be easy is what i thought but i've never caught a falling star on camera or kept a firefly alight in a jar so keep me up all night if you must through the day and into the dusk i can't help but over analyze and criticize myself too much too much too soon use a symphony of crickets or a distant engine sound i don't mind what it takes just drown the voices out use the pain beneath my feet to put the words into my mouth wherever and whatever it must take now (instrumental chorus) the rain is driving, my hands feel old everyone is asking if i'm tired of the cold i guess that i am but my roots need water and my branches need the wind i'll come in, i'll come in when i can just keep me up all night if you must through the day and into the dusk i don't want to over analyze and criticize myself too much too much too soon
6.
won’t be satisfied (courtney hartman) we have seen mercy rise up like a mountain we have seen a mountain settle into sea we have seen the sea swallow up a thousand we have seen a thousand rise in victory we won't be satisfied sing the children, the children we won't be satisfied sing the children of the land we have seen clouds that brought no water we have seen water fought over in vain many times in vain we have listened for the thunder many times the thunder still brought no rain but we won't be satisfied sing the children, the children we won't be satisfied sing the children of the land we will not be a tree that bears no fruit and we will not be a fruit that is bitter in it’s taste we will not be a tree that bears no fruit and we will not be fruit that is bitter in it’s taste and we won't be satisfied sing the children, the children we won't be satisfied sing the children of the land
7.
Neglect 03:11
8.
koyaanisqatsi (courtney hartman) your breath is burning my skin your mouth takes in my water the life in my veins boiling over our balance swinging high out of orbit pendulum falling from the sky catching the horizon the clouds roll like a river the rain falls sharp as ice the ocean tumbles over like mist in the night water looks like water running my heart is a machine a machine keeping time my body is a building scraping at the sky water looks like water running water looks like water running
9.
Finis Terrae 05:02
finis terrae (courtney hartman) i can feel the ground under my feet gently upholding me overhead the clouds laying low drip like honeycomb i’ll rise again to follow my shadow into the day out to the end of the earth down with sun in the water everyday a line in the weave a whole and new tapestry pulling at the fray i can see your color in my seam i’ll rise again to follow my shadow into the day out to the end of the earth down with sun in the water i’ll rise again follow my shadow into the day out to the end of the earth where we'll burn these dirty old clothes lay our muscle and bones we’ll burn these dirty old clothes lay our muscle and bones down with sun in the water
10.
here's to the ones (courtney hartman) this is an ode to remembering hands that held me in their care all the ones along and beside me the darkness and the laughter we shared here's to the ones you meet along the way and here's to the ones that make you want to stay like never ending fields of summer in their eyes i must have seen a glimpse of what i thought could be forever or a kind of a color heaven sent here's to the ones you meet along the way here’s to the ones that make it hard to say so long here's to the ones you meet along the way and here's to the ones that make you want to stay and here’s to the ones you lose along the way and here's to the ones that make it hard to say so long if we never meet again know that i still call you friend know that every now and then i wonder about you

about

ready reckoner:
a table of questions. a walking into, and through.

hollow // opening prayer. to be hollowed out, emptied in order to allow a resonance, a sounding through, a sound returned.

january first // the planning stages. a setting out, admittance of a love

january third // recognition of a dissonance. an affair with the color green.

belfry ll my calling out. and then, for fear of speaking, a turning away. written in sight of a belfry, written with the words of the prophet/poet Amos in mind.
(known for writing against the disparity between the wealthy and the poor.)

too much ll near the end of the way, weary of doubt weighing in. every word is fact.
(i never wanted anyone to hear me sing it, yet it became a vessel to carry the most raw of me.)

won’t be satisfied ll a rallying to protect our home, a refusal of complacency or acceptance.

neglect ll once a song, a conversation between blue and green.
if i neglect to see, all of the blue and green, bind up my ears and feet.

koyaanisqatsi ll meaning: life out of balance. the dissonance between us and our home, our ground, our water.

finis terrae ll latin, meaning the end of the earth. arriving there, i burn my clothes, bathe in the sea, returning, a new woman.
a song for rising day after day, to follow our shadows through to the end. everyday begins again.

here’s to the ones ll my thank you song - to every eye, hand and heart who has taken me in. to those whose faces i have forgotten, to those whose names are burned into me. and to every person who gave of themselves before and throughout the making of this album. you are all like water to me.
